设m是可微的流形， 在m的每一点处安放一个切向量， 要求这些切向量的基点连续移动时，他们也跟着连续地变动的。这些切向量全体称为m上的一个切向量场。

举例来说， 地球是一个流形m， 在1月1日12:00,我们把地球上的每一点处的风向记下来，画成一张全球风向图。 一点处的风向就是切向量， 这张风向图就是切向量场。

一个著名的定理就是说， 地球上任何时刻的风向图中， 必有一处的风速为零（就是没有风）。

这说明微分几何与拓扑学有着密切的关系。 上述定理实际上是著名的derham上同调的推论。
